FAWU Supports A Food Charter Programme

In light of the many poor communities and workers in South Africa and our union being one of the largest organisations representing workers in the agricultural sector, we are fully supportive of the establishment of provincial food charter programmes.

There is a need to establish such a charter as we need to review the way we as South Africans are looking at food especially in terms of ensuring food security. Most workers earn minimum wage salaries and can hardly afford the food they produce. As a nation we have become so dependent on retailers to purchase food from that we neglected to consider alternative forms, eg. supporting small-scale subsistence and emerging farmers that often produce quality food products as opposed to food produced for a heavily mechanized commercial sector.

By taking part in such an initiative, we hope to explore different aspects of the food cycle such as the availability, access, quality, cost, distribution, wastage and environmental issues that have an impact on the food we eat.

We therefore recognised that we have a moral obligation to pursue avenues that will ensure that we all, including marginalised citizens, enjoy better access and distribution to quality and nutritional food in our country.
