FAWU Says NO To "Free-range Rights to GMO Holders and Wide-range Use of GMOs"

21 August 2018

The Food and Allied Workers' Union (FAWU) has noted the application for the general release/use into South Africa of glyphosate-resistant genetically modified maize by DuPoint Pioneer Hi-bred RSA Pty Ltd.

However, as FAWU, we are concerned about the wider usage of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our country, especially because we are told of their destruction, through cross-pollination, to non-GMOs and to health effects to human consumption.

Also, of concern is the issue of patenting the seeds as part of intellectual property built into the arrangements and this leaves non-GMOs farmers with little control on the use of "contaminated" seeds.

In the name of our environment, health and food security FAWU will make its own brief submission and, if needs be, embark on a campaign against this requested wide-range use/release of GMO maize by DuPoint Pioneer.

There will a lot of interested groups making submission on the matter and we call on those who agree with us and have the necessary technical capacity to compile submissions in opposition to this application and get involved in this process.
