SAFTU Campaign Against National Minimum Wage & Labour Laws Amendment

Date: 27 March 2018

Where: Keizersgracht Street To City of Cape Town and National Parliament

Thousands of SAFTU members will march to the City of Cape Town and National Parliament on Tuesday,27 March 2018 under a Section 77 Notice ( protecting all workers) of the Labour Act in protest against Labour Law Amendments and the National Minimum wage in its current form.

The federation`s demands are based mainly on the following factors:

  • LRA: The scrapping of secret balloting before a strike as it will limit unions` right to strike;
  • NMW: Scrap the R3500 national minimum wage - it means nothing, we want a living wage;
  • Basic Conditions of the Employment Act: Protection of existing rights in sectoral determinations as the minimum wage could in time phase out the right to housing on farms.
  • Western Cape Water Crisis: Congratulates the Water Crisis Coalition for forcing the DA to cancel Day Zero and protest against the rapid privatisation of water through increased tariffs, large-scale desalination and water restrictor devices.
