Press release by FAWU on the outbreak of Listeriosis and temporary closure of operations

5 March 2018

The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) has noted with concern the announcement by the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motswaledi, on the traced sources and origin of the Listeriosis decease as being Tiger Group`s cold meat processing trading as Enterprise and RCL Group`s cold meat processing trading as RCL Food.

We call on authorities to leave no stone unturned in establishing all the facts and figures related to this outbreak and for both companies to cooperate with authorities in this regard given the importance of the health of South Africans, especially the poor people who rely on these products for their daily meals.

Meanwhile, we call on both companies not to punish workers for this outbreak by a way of unpaid wages as this disaster cannot be blamed on workers and that it is management in both companies who should shoulder responsibility.

For more information and further clarifications contact Katishi Masemola, General Secretary, at 082 467 2509, Mayoyo Mngomezulu, Deputy General Secretary, at 082 440 4039, Dominque Martin, Media Officer, at 082 498 5631
