300 FAWU Members Strike At TONGAAT-HULETT Starch

The 300 members of the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), working for Tongaat-Hulett Starch (THS), a division of Tongaat-Hulett Group, across its four worksites (3 in Gauteng and another in W Cape) remain on a protected strike and reaches the 3- week mark since they started on the 29th December 2017.

The strike action is in pursuit of members` demands for the following:

  • 10.5% wage increment;
  • Overtime pay for higher-grades employees when working on weekends and public holidays;
  • Improved Standby Allowance by R200 from R267 and R461 to respectively R467 and R661

This strike action was initiated after three rounds of negotiations and a session of conciliation/medication could not result into an agreement. Given the great performance of THS our members are adamant that they need to share piece of the pie and it cannot be only shareholders smiling all the way to the bank.
