Heartlands Food Employee Abducted From Work

24 August 2017

Siphelele Dlamini, a member of FAWU and employed by Heartlands Food in Pietermaritzburg by way of a labour broker says that he was abducted during night shift on Wednesday, 16 August 2017 and alleges his production manager had something to do with it.

Siphelele says the manager instructed him to fetch a refuse bin from a dark corner on the company premises on the night in question and he then proceeded to do so. It is then that a stranger approached him and upon confirmation of his name, he was forced into a vehicle. The poor employee was then driven off to a remote area and interrogated at gun point. The person accused him of stealing from the company and insisted to know the names of people believed to be stealing from the company. He was informed that he would be killed and his body dumped where no one would find him. Fearing for his life he uttered a few names while the suspect made a video recording of the events.

Afterwards, he was dumped far away from his workforce. He went to the police station to report the matter and a case has been opened at the Plessislaer Police Station (case number 466/1/17). The comrade was then assisted by police to go back to the workplace where his personal belongings were.

Relations are tense at the company as workers have embarked on an illegal strike demanding answers regarding the manager in question and safety measures at the workplace. Several employees have also been dismissed unfairly since the incident as they were questioning the company for its conduct in the matter. The company are regularly exploiting our members and not complying with labour legislation. The labour broker is not sympathetic to the traumatised worker and is apparently always defending the employer`s misconduct in terms of unfair dismissals and related matters.
