Triple A Meat Workers In Pietermaritzburg On Strike

About 200 employees at Triple A Meat Pty Ltd in the Crammond area just outside Pietermaritzburg embarked on a legal strike last week. About 70 workers in the feedlot division of the company embarked on a protected strike on 20 July 2017 while more than a 100 at the abattoir division went on strike on the 24th of July 2017. Workers are demanding an entry level salary of R 5000 and a R900 wage increase for those earning more than R 5000. The company has gone ahead and implemented a 9 % wage increase unilaterally, with no consideration for the union`s legitimate demands.

Workers are also infuriated with the so -called "discretionary" bonuses they are being paid. This ruthless employer apparently pays workers bonuses based on a demeriting system which punishes employees for all kinds of willy-nilly reasons and is morally repugnant to say the least. It says a lot about the sad state of relations between management and employees.

The company`s employees are also unhappy with the providend fund administration by Momentum. Our members claim they do not received any statements, have no representative trustees and in general just received poor service from Momentum. Our members are to decide on whether they will move out of the scheme or stay on under improved conditions.

Other demands include employee medical assistance, funeral scheme and and agency shop agreements.

FAWU remains open to further wage negotiations in good faith.
