Victory for Sugar Workers

FAWU and the management of Illovo came to an amicable agreement on Tuesday, 4 July after weeks of wage negotiations resulted in a deadlock two weeks ago. Talks between the two parties intensified over the last couple of weeks as the union has already issued a strike notice on two separate occasions and was prepared to embark on a full-blown strike. The two parties managed to narrowly avert a full-blown strike of about 100 members employed on the sugar cane fields.

Both the union and company reviewed their initial offers - 10 % and 5% respectively- resulting in both agreeing on a reasonable wage increase. After consultations, our members accepted a 7,5 percent wage increase and a Providend fund which would come into effect on 1 April 2018.
