Sugar Workers Strike Still On The Cards

The Food and Allied Worker’s Union (F.A.W.U.) had an extensive meeting with Illovo management on Friday, 30 June 2017 until late in the evening in order to see whether the two parties could find common ground on the issue of wage increases.

The union revised its offer from ten to 8% while management increased its latest offer of 5 percent to 6,5%. It has, however, come to our attention that management also attempted to persuade our members to sign acceptance of 6,5% and we condemn this in the strongest terms as it undermines the negotiating process and the trust relationship between the parties.

FAWU is currently busy gathering feedback from our members on these 8 farms in the South Coast of KZN and has issued the company today with a second notice of intention to strike. On account of the new notice the strike will commence on Wednesday at 06h00.
