FAWU wishes all a happy Freedom Day

The Food and Allied Workers` Union (F.A.W.U.) wishes all staff, members, leaders and associates a Happy Freedom Day ! On this day, we wish to commemorate the first ever free and fair non-racial democratic elections in South Africa held on 27 April 2017 whereby 19.7 million citizens voted.

Whilst we commemorate this historic event in our history, we cannot but ignore the current reality we find ourselves in today. As a nation, we need to reflect on what kind of future we are headed towards. South Africa has reached a cross roads. The government is turning its back on the poor. Our economy is suffering. Our people are suffering.

On 27 April 1994, we thought we would never reach the point of despair again. But here we are. -facing an economic crisis. The country is on the brink of an economic revolution.

Last week FAWU, together with other progressive unions participated in the the historical launch of the newly born South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU). We are now readying ourselves to take up the struggle for freedom of corruption, poverty, inequality and unemployment.

"For to be free is not merely to cast off one`s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others."

-Long Walk To Freedom, Nelson Mandela
