FAWU Says Save Jobs!
F.A.W.U is calling on the South African government to urgently convene a Health and Jobs Summit following the worsening job loss crisis in several local industries that came about as a result of several detrimental policy decisions by government. So far, the poultry sector has been hit hard due to cheap chicken imports and companies have already embarked on retrenchments. FAWU is leading this campaign together with the relevant stakeholders. FAWU also voiced its concerns over job losses as a result of a sugar tax affecting the beverage industry. Radical new tobacco legislation by government is also in the pipeline and British American Tobacco (BAT) has already indicated that they might have to close down the Heidelberg plant in Johannesburg which will lead to further job losses.
It is evident that the job loss crisis is spiralling out of control and requires urgent intervention by government to curb South Africa`s downward spiral to further unemployment and poverty.
