Statement on the Resolution of the Industrial Action at Tiger Beverages

18 November 2016

The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) is pleased to announce that the strike by its 440 members, working for Tiger Beverages, a division of Tiger Brands Group, has come to an end on Friday, 18 November 2016, following an agreement, reached today as sketched below, and after four weeks of industrial action.

As a consequence of the agreement the following dispute issues were resolved and agreed as follows.

  • A basic wage increment of 8% across the board
  • An 10.77% Increase on both Housing and Traveling Allowances
  • Permanent Employment of 15 Seasonal Workers, backdated to 2015

Workers will be expected to resume duties on the 22nd November 2016 (Tuesday) at the earliest and later in the week for those who may have travelled outside Gauteng for whatever reason.

We take this opportunity to salute our members for such a brave strike action in pursuit of their demands, especially on permanent employment of workers and allowances on critical issues of traveling and housing given how expensive is the cost of transport and the dire shortage of decent shelter in this country.

This settlement agreement was reached following a successful protest march by these workers to the heartland of corporate South Africa at Bryanston, next to Sandton, last Friday (11th November 2016).
