FAWU Specific Campaigns

Broad Based Black economic empowerment

As FAWU continues to engage with organised business and / or government in BEE charter negotiations, such as AgriBEE, liquor BEE and soft drinks BEE, principles of mass empowerment through job creation and skills development, broad based ownership equity spread and poverty eradication will guide our approach. The union will confront any BEE deal that excludes workers as majority beneficiaries.

Agricultural Transformation / Plight of Farm Workers:

FAWU supports initiatives to speed up land distribution and agricultural transformation. The union supports the SACP’s land reform initiatives by participating in the party’s annual Red October campaign. FAWU has embarked on a recruitment drive among farm workers and will be actively involved in all aspects related to the interests of farm workers.

Food Prices/Food Security/ Price-fixing:

FAWU will initiate and support programmes that will promote food security and relatively stable prices of the staple foods such as maize, which is essential for the poor. It has also called for neutral research into genetically modified organisms and its effects on consumer goods. FAWU is also actively campaigning against  anti-competitive conduct ( price-fixing) between food companies . FAWU supports the Competition Commission in its efforts  to put an end to these monopolies.

Other Campaigns:

Job and Poverty Campaign

With FAWU being an affiliate of COSATU, the union is participating in the campaign to promote job creation and serve the poor with the federation steering the campaign at a NEDLAC level.

FAWU Challenges

The union is facing many challenges as the food and beverage sector is constantly facing job losses, large -scale retrenchments, casualisation and exploitation of workers. The economic situation, globalisation and the outsourcing of labour is creating even more challenges for workers and for the poor. Despite these obstacles, the union is determined to protect the hard-won rights of workers in South Africa.
